Jack Green



Jack Green grew up in  Dorchester, attended Boston English High School, Graduated from Boston University and got his Master’s Degree from Boston State.  Jack was the head football coach at Charlestown High School for 31 years and had a great history in semi pro football for many years. 

Jack coached the Charlestown Townies in the old Boston Park League from l971 to 1978 and won five league championships in 72, 73, 74, 75 and 77 while being named Coach of the Year in 72, 74 and 75.   Jack was also President of the Park League in 1977 and had a record of 64wins,10 losses and 5 ties.

 

In l980 Jack took over as head coach of the Hyde Park Cowboys of the Eastern Football League and coached there until 1987 registering a record of 67 wins and 13 losses winning League titles in l981, 82 and 84 and received Coach of the Year recognition in 82, 84 and 87.

 

Coach Green followed his tenure with the Cowboys by returning to coach the Charlestown Townies from l988 to 1995 - winning 42 games and losing 28.

 

Last year Jack returned to coaching to help start the Braintree Cowboys.

 

During his many years coaching Jack received several individual awards. He was named to the American Football Association Hall of Fame. He received the William Ohrenberger Award from the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston for his many contributions to football and was also named Coach of the Year by the Association of New England Football Officials.  Jack was also elected to the Massachusetts High School Hall of Fame.

 

Coach Green also coached with the Shriners All Star Game and was head coach for the City of Boston Darryl Williams All Star Game.

 

Jack is survived by his wife Jean (Mayer) Green of Squantum. Loving father of John J. Green and his wife Marilyn, Marie K. Keough and her husband Danny all of Squantum, Anthony Green and his wife Susan of Hingham. Brother of Bertha Mudge of Whitman, Barbara Matthies of Norwood, Mary Butts of Brockton and the late Robert Green. Devoted grandfather of John, Daniel and Elizabeth Green of Squantum and Megan and Joseph Keough of Walpole.

 

The wake will be held Saturday April 23 from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock Street Quincy, and the Funeral Mass will be held Monday April 25th at l1:00 at St. Anne’s Church 757 Hancock Street in Quincy.
