Oilers kickoff the 2012 season in style

The Oilers kicked off the 2012 season with a stunning come from behind victory vs the always potent Clinton Irish Blizzard.

The Oilers struck first with an acrobatic touchdown catch by Will Price on a 30 yard pass from QB James Merrick. The extra point was blocked, leaving the Oilers with a 6-0 lead.

Two series later Clinton took the lead 7-6. Clinton had an opportunity to extend their lead in the 1st half but the staunch Oilers defense blocked a field goal attempt, and the game remained 7-6 until the waning moments of the game.

After another inspired stand by the Oiler defense, Clinton was forced to punt with just over 2 minutes to go in the game. The Oilers received the ball on the 13 yard line, needing to go @ 70 yards for a realistic go-ahead field go-ahead attempt against a tough Clinton D that had shut out the Oilers since early in the first quarter.

The gritty Oilers rose to the occasion. Behind the steady leadership of QB James Merrick, the Oilers methodically drove down the field the full 87 yards and scored teh go-ahead touchdown on a pass from Merrick to WR Patrick "T.O." Kromah in which Kromah absolutely refused to be taken down, fighting off numerous tackles willing himself through the Clinton defense for a 20 yard touchdown.

The Oilers then went for the 2-point conversion, and were successful thanks to a huge push from the offensive line and a bone-crushing block by FB Mike Wright springing RB Brooks Payne for a crucial 2 points. Both Payne and fellow RB Leon McBean had strong nights toting the rock for the Oilers, displaying elusiveness, power, explosion, and great vision. Few teams in the EFL have a 1-2 punch at running back as potentially dynamic as the Oilers do in Payne & McBean (and giving the Oilers even more depth is RB/LB John Guy who is an exceptional runner as well).

After taking the 14-7 lead, it was up to the Oiler defense to close out the game as Clinton received the ball back with just over a minute to play and the savy and skilled QB John Riccio at the hem after a season off, along with his favorite target TE Ernie Adams- one of the best in the EFL. But once again the Oilers defense, led by LB Colby Gallagher and CB Norm Burns, dug in their heals and kept Clinton out of the end zone. Clinton drove down to the Oilers 23 yard line, but big defensive plays by the Oilers secondary broke up several attempts to the endzone and the Oilers held on to win their home opener and gain important momentum and confidence heading into their week 2 matchup vs arch rival Charlestown Townies.

The victory was an important confidence booster, proving that this Oiler squad has the skill and composure and heart to rally from behind late in a game against a top notch veteran team like Clinton. The win was a total TEAM EFFORT-- and there are too many players who had outstanding performances to point out individually in this abbreviated summary (check back soon for more details). But both veterans and the new Oiler arrivals in 2012 showed the character and heart it will take to make this a successful season.

Please join us this coming Friday, July 2nd, at Randolph High as the Oilers look to run their record to 2-0. Kickoff is at 7:30.
